Shift Change:ThumbsUp! Redoby Louie Adame, Rank & File VP, Youth Division As part of our commitment to protect public safety in California, CCPOA long ago turned its attention to the victims of crime, and to helping them get the recognition and rights they deserve. With that, came the resolution to help protect the children of this state. And at a CCPOA chapter meeting in a little pizza shop in Madera in the summer of 1997, the CCPOA Thumbs Up! child protection project was born. This complimentary service offers parents a child identification card featuring the photo and thumbprint of their children. If the child is discovered missing, the information on the ID card can assist law enforcement in the critical first hours of a missing child investigation. Having this crucial information at their fingertips offers parents peace of mind. Thumbs Up! has been very successful in California, and the project team for Thumbs Up! is regularly requested by many county officials, state legislators, and hospitals to participate in health and safety fairs statewide. Unfortunately, because the Department of Personnel Administration seems intent on eliminating CCPOA's long-standing Release Time Bank program, it has become difficult to get members off work to manage our Thumbs Up! project. Therefore, all Thumbs Up! events for the rest of 2008 have been cancelled until further notice. However, during this unexpected down time, CCPOA will be updating the Thumbs Up! equipment. The computers used by our team members are five years old and in need of updating. There are newer systems that can scan fingerprints much quicker than those we've been using. This project renovation calls for a new logo for our Thumbs Up! T-shirts. CCPOA is sponsoring a contest for those who want to submit their drawings of a new Thumbs Up! logo. The winning logo design will be showcased at our September convention in Las Vegas. Please submit your logo drawings to CCPOA in West Sacramento, to my attention, or e-mail to: louie.adame@ccpoa.org.
