Last Update: June 30, 2008 May 1-31, 2008 Compiled by Nichol Gomez CCPOA Communications Division May 5 - An LVN was treating an inmate when he lunged at the nurse and cut her forearm with a razor. Physical force was used to control the inmate. A subsequent search of the inmate's cell yielded two additional weapons. The LVN was taken to an outside hospital for treatment. May 2 - In Ad Seg, an inmate appeared to have a seizure in his cell. Staff responded and called for medical. As staff prepared to conduct a medical extraction, the inmate sprang to his feet and charged staff. Staff utilized pepper spray, baton and physical force to subdue and restrain the inmate. One officer was cut in the neck, another officer suffered a swollen knee and a third officer sustained abrasions to the arm. Two of the officers were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries and for exposure to blood. May 1 - Floor officers were in the process of retrieving food trays when an Ad Seg inmate shoved his tray through the cell port and threw his food at one of the officers. The inmate continued to reach his arm through the port to strike the officer, who utilized pepper spray to stop the attack. CALIFORNIA STATE PRISON-SACRAMENTO May 27 - An inmate refused to submit to an unclothed body search after returning late from yard recall. Staff repeated the order. The inmate complied but began throwing his clothing to the ground. The inmate was asked to submit to handcuffs. As custody staff reached for the inmate's arm, the inmate turned aggressively raising his elbow in an attempt to strike an officer. Staff applied downward pressure to the inmate's arm and shoulders forcing him to the ground. The inmate continued to resist by thrashing his body and trying to get up. Staff applied leg restraints, lifted the inmate from the ground and escorted him to a holding cell. One officer sustained a right shoulder and elbow strain and a reddened knee but returned to work. May 22 - An officer was spit on by a PSU inmate, striking the officer in the neck and arm. No force was used. May 18 - Officers were assisting medical staff to administer a doctor ordered emergency medication to an inmate in a holding cell. The inmate rushed the cell door as it was being opened and kicked an officer in the stomach. The inmate was forced to the ground but continued to struggle by thrashing his body back and forth. Offices applied leg restraints and medical staff administer the emergency medication. May 14 - An inmate in a holding cell became agitated and attempted to break his handcuffs off on the corner of the cell table. When the escort officer ordered the inmate to stop his actions, he spit at the officer. The officer utilized pepper spray to stop the inmate's actions. Staff utilized a hand held metal detector during the contamination process and detected metal contraband in the inmate's anal cavity. After the decontamination shower, the inmate voluntarily removed the metal items and admitted to having additional metal contraband in his cell and inside of his state issued blue coat. May 11 - An inmate threw an unknown liquid at two officers escorting an inmate on a management yard. When the liquid struck one of the officers on his face and upper body, he used his pepper spray on the inmate, who then stopped his assault and retreated to the far side of the yard. May 10 - While staff conducted a cell search, the inmate complied with orders to exit his cell but then moved back into the cell as he was removing an object from his sock. Staff utilized pepper spray in an attempt to stop the inmate from flushing the object down the toilet. The inmate was able to flush the object and staff restrained the inmate and escorted him to be decontaminated. Staff accessed the sewer clean-out and recovered an inmate-manufactured weapon, a plastic rod measuring six inches long. May 8 - A PSU inmate had broken out the rear window of his cell and was acting erratically inside his cell. The inmate refused all orders to calm down and submit to handcuffs. Staff standing outside of the broken cell window used pepper spray each time the inmate attempted to climb out of the broken window. The inmate was yelling and thrashing about in the glass on the cell floor and doing somersaults onto the glass. An extraction team was assembled as staff attempted to get the inmate to calm down. Pepper spray had no noticeable effect on the inmate and he continued to wander around the cell, lying in the glass and acting erratically. A gas dispersion was discharged into the cell. As the inmate placed his head in the toilet, the extraction team entered the cell in an attempt to restrain the inmate. The inmate continued to fight officers and was covered in blood and pepper spray. As staff were overwhelmed with pepper spray they were replaced by a second extraction team standing by. After some time, the inmate was restrained and the officers removed him from the cell and escorted him to be decontaminated. During the escort and decontamination the inmate continued to fight the officers. He was resistive throughout the escort and while being medically evaluated. Medication administered several times in an attempt to calm him down had no effect. When the inmate finally calmed down he was transported to an outside hospital. May 8 - While escorting an inmate to his assigned cell, the cellmate ran out of the cell pushing the officer back. The unit sergeant responded to the upper tier ordering the inmate to get down on the ground. The inmate refused the order. The sergeant grabbed the inmate and turned him around placing him against the wall as staff handcuffed him. CORCORAN STATE PRISON May 5 - An inmate approached a floor officer, yelling and making threats. A second floor officer observed the commotion and approached the incident. The floor officer felt threatened and drew her pepper spray. The inmate then turned and began walking toward his cell, but suddenly turned back and began to advance rapidly toward the officer. The inmate ignored a second officer's orders to back up. The officer then grabbed the inmate and placed him in handcuffs without further incident. DEUEL VOCATIONAL INSTITUTION May 27 - Three inmates were being escorted from a courthouse vehicle sally port, when one of the inmates fell to the ground and appeared to be shaking. One of the inmates pulled away from the officer when the sound of metal hit the ground. The officer turned to see one of the inmates run toward the exit ramp free of his leg chains and handcuffs. The officer immediately began chasing the inmate on foot. Two civilians attempted to stop the inmate, but one of the civilians was struck in the face by the inmate. The inmate then ran toward a stopped vehicle and opened the driver door. The inmate attempted to pull the female driver out of her car but she sped off with the inmate hanging onto the opened door. The officer continued to chase the inmate attached to the car. A civilian male in a truck asked the officer if he needed help, so the officer got into the vehicle and continued to follow the inmate. The vehicle eventually stopped, the female driver ran from the vehicle and the inmate attempted to get into the driver's seat, as the officer got out of the truck and ran toward the inmate. At the same time, a civilian male rammed his motorcycle into the opened driver's side door. The officer then pulled the inmate from the vehicle and onto the ground. The inmate continued to resist, so the officer applied pepper spray to the inmate's face. The officer gained control of the inmate and he was handcuffed. KERN VALLEY STATE PRISON May 18 - An inmate committed battery on an officer. When staff opened the food port of a cell, an inmate reached through the open food port and grabbed the officer's duty belt and pulled the officer in towards the cell door. Staff utilized pepper spray to gain compliance with orders to release the officer. The inmate complied with staff orders to submit to being placed in handcuffs. The inmate was re-housed in ASU. The officer sustained no injuries and remained on duty to complete his assigned shift. May 9 - Yard staff observed three inmates starting to batter another inmate. The control booth officer ordered the yard down and all inmates complied except the combatants. Responding staff formed a skirmish line near the incident and gave verbal orders for the combatants to stop fighting and assume a prone position on the ground. The combatants then complied with staff orders. The three inmates were placed into handcuffs and medically evaluated, cleared and rehoused in Ad Seg. Staff found a screwdriver, more than five inches in length and sharpened to a point with a three-inch cloth handle at the other end. All four inmates were identified as Southern Hispanics. May 2 - In a dining room, seven Hispanic inmates were involved in a riot. Staff utilized pepper spray and 40mm to stop the riot. The inmates were medically evaluated and had only minor injuries. There were no injuries to staff. The inmates were rehoused in Ad Seg. A preliminary investigation revealed that the disturbance was related to drug debts. May 2 - While at the Kern County Courthouse, an inmate committed battery against a transportation officer. The inmate made derogatory statements and then spat on the officer. PAROLE May 25 - A parolee-at-large is suspected of attempting to run over a Hayward police officer during a traffic stop. May 21 - Three parolees were arrested in connection with the drive-by shooting that critically injured a toddler as he played in front of his west Modesto home. The gunfire missed the intended target and struck the 22-month-old boy. May 21 - A parolee shot a victim and then barricaded himself in his residence. After several hours, the parolee surrendered and was taken into custody. During the subsequent search, officers discovered a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition and body armor. May 20 - A parolee-at-large pointed a gun at a person telling them to pay up and then shot the victim in the shoulder. The parolee was arrested and held at the Sacramento County Jail. May 18 - A parolee was observed shooting into an occupied vehicle in which both occupants were hit. Both victims were taken to a local hospital, treated and released. Vallejo police were contacted and the parolee was arrested. May 17 - A parolee was in a physical altercation and struck the victim on the head with a metal pipe. The victim died instantly. The following day the parolee was arrested and held at the Yolo County Jail. May 17 - A parolee angered by a custody dispute with his ex-girlfriend, shot her and two men. The parolee was arrested and held at the Los Angeles Police Department. May 14 - A parolee-at-large stabbed and killed a 23-year-old man in a gas station parking lot in the city of Fallbrook. The parolee fled but was eventually caught. May 12 - Two parolees were involved in a fight that resulted in one of the parolees shooting the other parolee five times. The shooter parolee fled on foot and remained at large. May 12 - A parolee attacked a female victim who was walking her one-year-old daughter. The victim started to scream for help when the parolee began hitting her in the face. As the victim struggled, the parolee put his hand on her throat and tried to pull down her shirt. Two men who heard the screams responded to the scene. The parolee attempted to run away but the men were able to detain the parolee until police arrived. May 11 - A parolee was identified as the perpetrator of an attack that left another man with major head injuries, a broken nose, a broken jaw and damage to his larynx. The parolee fled the scene but surrendered the following day. May 5 - A parolee who was released from prison three days prior robbed two victims at knifepoint. The parolee was arrested a short time later and is being held at the San Joaquin County Jail. PELICAN BAY STATE PRISON May 10 - Staff found an inmate intoxicated and being destructive to state property within his assigned cell. To secure the safety of his cell mate, staff used pepper spray to stop his actions. When staff proceeded to remove the inmate from the cell, he kicked the sergeant in the knee and an officer in the leg. During the escort to medical, the inmate spit on another officer. May 6 - A SHU inmate being escorted to the SHU, kicked another inmate also being escorted. Staff used physical force to regain control of the assaultive inmate. Both inmates were medically evaluated and rehoused without further incident. One officer and one inmate sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident. SALINAS VALLEY STATE PRISON May 12 - An inmate became resistive as two officers were conducting a clothed body search. The inmate assaulted one of the officers by striking him in the chest. Both officers forced the inmate to the ground and while attempting to restrain him, the inmate attempted to punch one of the officer in the face. The inmate stopped resisting and became compliant after hearing that staff were about to use pepper spray. The inmate was secured in handcuffs and placed in Ad Seg. One of the officers sustained minor injuries but returned to work. May 5 - On a recreation yard, staff members were in a group when an inmate approached and punched one of the officers in the face. Officers ordered all inmates on the yard to assume a prone position. The combative inmate refused to comply and instead punched two other officers in the face. Staff discharged one 40mm direct impact round aimed toward the left of the inmate as a warning. The inmate then complied with orders to assume a prone position. Responding staff secured the inmate in restraints. During the subsequent escort, the inmate attempted to spit on staff. The escorting officers forced the inmate to the ground and a spit hood was applied. One officer suffered a broken nose and was transported to an outside medical facility for additional treatment. May 2 - An MTA was distributing medication to inmates when an inmate grabbed the MTA's wrist and attempted to pull her arm into the cell through the food port opening.
