March 30 - Kern Valley State Prison - Two inmates attacked another inmate by repeatedly striking the inmate in the chest and face. The housing unit Control Booth Officer discharged one Direct Impact round, striking one of the inmates in the hand; this had the desired effect as all inmates stopped fighting and assumed a prone position on the ground. Responding staff placed the three inmates in handcuffs and escorted them to the program area where they were medically evaluated, cleared and re-housed in ASU. March 30 - Salinas Valley State Prison - While monitoring Recreation Yard on Facility C, staff observed two inmates fighting. Both inmates refused staff orders to stop. Staff used OC, CN, and the 40mm to gain compliance from both inmates. The inmates were placed in ASU. CLICK HERE for Salinas Valley State Prison archive. March 28 - Folsom State Prison - As an Officer was searching level one camp inmates, an inmate had an unauthorized lunch. When the Officer asked the inmate to open the wrapped bread, the Officer saw what appeared to be a bindle between the slices of bread and attempted to retrieve it. A struggle ensued and both the Officer and the inmate fell to the ground before the Officer gained control and restrained the inmate. The Officer sustained injuries to his arm and hand. The Officer was treated and released from a local hospital. The inmate was re-housed in ASU for battery on staff and possession of a controlled substance. CLICK HERE for Folsom State Prison archive. March 29 - Kern Valley State Prison - During the morning meal, two inmates began to attack another inmate striking his head and torso. The Control Booth Officer discharged one Direct Impact round and did not strike his intended target, but had the desired effect as the inmates stopped fighting and assumed a prone position on the ground. March 27 - California Rehabilitation Center - During a clothed body search, an inmate assaulted an Officer. The inmate struck the Officer's face and chest. March 26 - California Correctional Institution - While escorting an inmate to the Ad-Seg Unit after threatening an Officer, the inmate turned and struck one of the escorting Officers. Staff used physical force to subdue the inmate. The inmate was escorted without further incident. CLICK HERE for California Correctional Institution (CCI) archive. March 26 - Corcoran State Prison - Two inmates began fighting on the yard. Orders were given to stop fighting; to which the inmates did not comply. Responding Officers used OC pepper spray to stop the fight. An Officer was struck on the leg by one of the inmates with a sap type weapon. Another Officer was exposed to OC pepper spray. The battered Officer was relieved of duty to obtain medical care at an outside medical facility. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. March 26 - Kern Valley State Prison - Southern Hispanic inmates from seven different cells refused to comply with bed moves and covered their cell windows and doors with sheets, blankets and paper, making it impossible for staff to see into the cell. The on-site Incident Commander received authorization to conduct tactical cell extractions. The Incident Commander prepared to utilize a calculated use of force and assembled four cell extraction teams. Staff systematically followed cell extraction procedures and approached one cell at a time and gave verbal orders for the inmates to submit to being placed into handcuffs and exit the cell; the inmates refused and OC pepper spray was administered into each cell. The inmates complied with staff orders and submitted to being placed into handcuffs and removed from their cells. A total of 15 cells, 28 inmates, were involved in the incident. There was no physical force used or injuries to staff. All inmates were decontaminated, medically cleared and re-housed in ASU without further incident. March 26 - Kern Valley State Prison - A Medical Clinic Officer opened a holding cell door to allow another inmate into the holding cell; an inmate rushed through the open door, hitting the officer, pushing her backwards out of the way. The inmate then attacked another inmate, who was sitting in a chair in handcuffs. The inmate stabbed the victim inmate in the upper lip with an ink pen. The Officer gave verbal orders to get down while securing the holding cell door. The inmate complied and assumed a prone position. Responding staff placed the inmate in handcuffs and escorted him to the program area. The victim inmate was treated in the medical clinic and subsequently escorted to the Triage and Treatment area where he received sutures to close the wound. The assailant inmate was re-housed in ASU. There was no use of force or injuries to staff. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison archive. March 26 - North Kern State Prison - Two Officers observed several inmates fighting. The inmates complied with staff orders to stop. Two weapons were recovered following the incident. The involved inmates were medically evaluated and re-housed in ASU. CLICK HERE for North Kern State Prison archive. March 25 - High Desert State Prison - During Facility C Yard afternoon activities, two inmates engaged in mutual combat. Staff utilized two Exact Impact rounds and one Stinger round to quell the incident. Both inmates were medically evaluated and determined to have sustained knee injuries. March 25 - Salinas Valley State Prison - Officers on Facility C Yard were monitoring yard release when they observed four Fresno Bulldog inmates run towards two Southern Hispanics and begin fighting. Staff ordered the yard to get down. Responding staff utilized OC pepper spray, CN and an Exact Impact round to stop the combative inmates and gain compliance with staff orders. All six inmates were medically evaluated, treated, decontaminated and placed in ASU. One of the inmates sustained injuries consistent with having been battered with a weapon. March 24 - North Kern State Prison - An inmate spat at an Officer striking him on the neck. The Officer was medically evaluated and cleared to return to work. CLICK HERE for North Kern State Prison archive. March 24 - Pelican Bay State Prison - An inmate who was being escorted back to his cell from the shower kicked one of the escorting Officers. Staff used physical force to place the inmate on the floor and maintain control of him while additional staff responded to the incident. The inmate was medically evaluated and found to have no injuries. The Officer who was kicked was not injured. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison archive. March 24 - Salinas Valley State Prison - DMH staff was distributing medication to inmates in their cells when an inmate gassed an MTA by throwing an unknown liquid substance on his face and back. The MTA activated his Personal Alarm Device and a Code I response was initiated. The MTA was taken to the Correctional Treatment Center and subsequently transported to an outside medical facility for precautionary exposure treatment. March 22 - California State Prison, Sacramento - The EOP Floor Officers were escorting an inmate from his assigned cell to the holding cell for medical clearance due to an indecent exposure that had happened earlier. As the escort came down the staircase, the inmate kicked one of the Officers. The Officer then used physical force to place the inmate on the ground. The other Officer helped control the inmate's legs. The Sergeant responded to the incident and placed a spit net on the inmate. Leg restraints were also placed on the inmate. March 22 - Corcoran State Prison - While supervising the evening recall of the dayroom, a riot broke out involving seven white inmates and six black inmates. Officers witnessed two inmates fighting each other on the C-section stairs. The Control Booth Officer activated a unit personal alarm device. One of the inmates fighting on the stairs tried to throw the other inmate off the stairs to the floor 12 feet below. The other black and white inmates began fighting each other. The floor Officers discharged OC pepper spray which quelled the incident. All 39 inmates were restrained, identified, and removed from the unit and medically examined. March 22 - Corcoran State Prison - Two inmates inside their cell engaged in mutual combat. Both inmates refused to comply with staff orders to cease. OC pepper spray was used to stop the attack. Both inmates complied with orders to stop fighting and submitted to handcuffs and exited their cell. One inmate was transported to the Acute Care Hospital due to his injuries. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. March 22 - Pelican Bay State Prison - An inmate attempted to barricade his cell. Staff used OC pepper spray on the inmate. The inmate then dipped his laundry bag in his toilet and began to swing it towards the Officers on the tier. Liquid from the bag struck one staff member on the arm. The inmate then used a cup containing unknown liquid throwing it from the cell, which struck the Officer in the arm. While the inmate was being given in-cell decontamination instructions, he was handcuffed and escorted to the CTC. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison archive. March 21 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Two inmates attacked another inmate on the Facility A Main Exercise Yard. Staff fired Exact Impact rounds in an effort to gain compliance to stop the attack. As staff were responding to the incident, the inmates stopped the attack and got down on the ground. The victim inmate received nine puncture wounds and eight lacerations. March 21 - Salinas Valley State Prison - Officers were attempting to conduct a clothed body search when a disruptive inmate assaulted two Officers in the Facility A, Housing Unit 5 dayroom. The Officers immediately grabbed the inmate and forced him to the ground. A Personal Alarm Device was activated. As the Officers attempted to restrain the inmate, the inmate was able to punch both officers in the face. One of the Officers sprayed OC pepper spray with negative results. Responding staff arrived and used physical force to restrain the inmate. After being treated for minor injuries, the inmate was placed in ASU. One Officer returned to work and the second Officer was transported to an outside medical facility for evaluation and treatment of a shoulder injury. March 20 - California Rehabilitation Center - Staff observed fighting between three Southern Hispanic inmates, which resulted in the use of OC pepper spray. The victim inmate was treated at an outside hospital, while the two assailants were placed on contraband watch pending transfers to the California Institution for Men. March 20 - California State Prison, Sacramento - Two Mexican National inmates assaulted and stabbed another Mexican National inmate on the B Facility Main Yard. Staff utilized one Exact Impact round, OC pepper spray, OC grenade, and physical force to quell the incident. The victim inmate received three puncture wounds to the abdomen and head trauma. The inmate was transported to UCD Medical Center. The inmate manufactured weapon measured approximately six inches in length and was made of a metal rod sharpened to a point. As a result of this incident all suspected Mexican Nationals and/or associates housed in 6 Block were placed on modified program pending an assessment and observation period. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 20 - High Desert State Prison - During Facility D Yard Morning Yard activities, two inmates attacked and battered another inmate. Staff utilized OC pepper spray, two Pocket Grenades and one Exact Impact round to quell the incident. All involved inmates were medically evaluated. It was determined that one assailant inmate sustained abrasions to the back of his head and neck. The other assailant inmate did not sustain any injuries. March 20 - Kern Valley State Prison - Confidential information was received that a Correctional Officer was targeted for assault with a weapon by various members of the Southern Hispanic disruptive group housed in Administrative Segregation. Acting on the information, cell searches were conducted and a total of 17 altered razors were discovered. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison archive. March 19 - California State Prison, Sacramento - On B Facility Main Yard, a Southern Hispanic was the victim of a battery with a weapon. The severity of the incident posed a significant risk to the safety and security of the institution and delayed the normal operations of the facility. As a result of this incident all suspected Southern Hispanic inmates and/or associates housed in 3 Block were placed on modified program pending an assessment and observation period. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 19 - High Desert State Prison - An inmate attacked another inmate while walking to the morning meal. Staff utilized OC pepper spray and one Stinger round to quell the incident. The assailant inmate was medically evaluated and was determined to not have sustained any injuries. The victim inmate was medically evaluated and determined to have a cut near his eye and a fractured cheekbone. CLICK HERE for High Desert State Prison archive. March 19 - Kern Valley State Prison - Two inmates were involved in mutual combat resulting in the use of OC pepper spray and one Stinger round. CLICK HERE for Kern Valley State Prison archive. March 19 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Two inmates attacked another inmate on the Main Exercise Yard of Facility B during yard recall. To gain compliance, staff used three Exact Impact rounds, OC pepper spray, physical force, and Expandable Batons. Two of the Exact Impact rounds hit their intended targets; the third round missed the intended target, but did not strike any inmates. All inmates involved had minor injuries. March 17 - California State Prison, Sacramento - An inmate covered his cell windows with paper and was unresponsive. Staff formed an emergency extraction team and entered the cell. The inmate suddenly became combative and assaulted the Shield Officer and second Officer that entered the cell. Staff were taken to an area hospital. One of the Officers sustained a split kneecap and needed emergency surgery. The other Officer received numerous cuts, abrasions and bruising to his face. March 16 - Corcoran State Prison - During SHU Exercise Yard, 67 Hispanic inmates had to be extracted from the yard. The inmates refused to leave the yard in protest of unclothed body searches. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. March 15 - Corcoran State Prison - During dayroom recall, an inmate committed battery on a Peace Officer. Two Officers, checking on welfare of an inmate, approached a cell of an inmate complaining of stomach pain. As the door was opened, without warning, the inmate lunged towards both Officers swinging his arms striking one of the Officers. Staff used physical force to gain control of the inmate. Responding staff arrived and placed the inmate in restraints without further incident. The inmate was re-housed in the Administrative Segregation. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. March 14 - Pelican Bay State Prison - In Unit 2A, two inmates were being escorted back to their cell following showers. Both inmates were placed inside their cell and when the handcuffs were removed from the first inmate, he attacked the second inmate with a razor blade, who was still in handcuffs. Staff immediately gave orders to stop the attack; to which the inmate did not comply. OC pepper spray was used and the inmate stopped the attack. The victim inmate was transported to the CTC, then to a hospital for additional treatment. The assailant was de-contaminated and re-housed. No staff were injured as a result of the incident. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison archive. March 14 - Salinas Valley State Prison - Staff on Facility C observed two inmates engaging in mutual combat on the recreation yard. The inmate refused numerous orders to stop fighting and a Code I response was initiated. Staff utilized an Exact Round and OC pepper spray to gain compliance. March 13 - California Medical Facility - An inmate in the medical guarding unit at Queen of the Valley hospital removed all his IV's, battered correctional staff, bit a nurse and exposed blood to all in the immediate area. March 13 - High Desert State Prison - During dayroom activities in Facility D, two inmates engaged in mutual combat. Staff utilized one Exact Impact Round to quell the incident. The round struck one inmate in the leg. The other inmate sustained abrasions to his face and shoulder. CLICK HERE for High Desert State Prison archive. March 13 - Pelican Bay State Prison - The Facility B8 Floor Officer was inside the Housing Unit office when a BMU inmate entered the office and proceeded to physically assault the Officer. The inmate hit the officer twice in the face. Staff used physical force and OC pepper spray to gain control of the combative inmate. The inmate was escorted from the area, decontaminated and found to have no injuries and placed in Administrative Segregation. The Officer was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. Stark Youth Correctional Facility - A ward assaulted an Officer during an unclothed body search, which resulted in injury to the Officer. March 12 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Five inmates attacked two inmates in the dayroom. Staff orders to stop were ignored. Three Exact Impact Rounds were used to gain compliance. March 12 - Corcoran State Prison - An inmate attempted to murder another inmate with an inmate manufactured stabbing weapon on the east exercise yard on 3A Facility. The ERV responded to the yard and transported the victim inmate, who had multiple stab wounds, to the acute care hospital. A crime scene was established and the weapon recovered. March 11 - Avenal State Prison - A riot erupted involving 23 Southern Hispanics and 13 Fresno Bulldogs inmates that resulted in one inmate being transported to an area hospital with head injuries. Staff orders to stop fighting were ignored. Staff then utilized force to stop the riot. No staff were injured. CLICK HERE for Avenal State Prison archive. March 11 - Folsom State Prison - Two inmates assaulted another inmate. Use of force involving OC pepper spray was needed to stop the fighting. The inmates received minor injuries as a result of the fighting with one inmate sustaining a broken hand. No staff injuries occurred. CLICK HERE for Folsom State Prison archive. March 10 - California State Prison, Sacramento - In a dayroom an inmate committed battery on another inmate, resulting in serious bodily injury. March 10 - California State Prison, Sacramento - B Facility 5-block Program Activities Officer observed two inmates engaged in mutual combat. The Officer ordered the inmates to stop and get down but the inmates continued to fight. Responding staff ordered the inmate to stop fighting then administered OC pepper spray. The inmates separated and assumed a prone position on the ground. Both inmates were decontaminated and medically evaluated. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 10 - High Desert State Prison - An inmate attempted to murder another inmate on the Facility C exercise yard. Staff used one Pocket Grenade to stop the incident. The victim inmate received a 10-inch laceration to the front of his neck after being slashed with a razor blade. The victim inmate was medically treated and re-housed in ASU. March 8 - Kern Valley State Prison - Eight Crip inmates became involved in a riot on the Facility B upper yard basketball court. Responding staff deployed one OC grenade into the incident site. As more staff responded the inmates stopped fighting and assumed a prone position on the ground. The inmates were placed in flex cuffs and escorted from the area. March 7 - California State Prison, Sacramento - Two Southern Hispanic inmates were being escorted from B Facility to the sally port while EOP yard was out. The Officers doing the escort ordered four EOP inmates to get off the track for the escort and the EOP inmates ignored the order and kept walking towards the escort. The escorting Officers ordered the EOP inmates two more times to move off the track for the escort before they complied. As the escort Officers passed the EOP inmates, the two Southern inmates ran towards the EOP inmates and started fighting with them. The escorting Officers used OC pepper spray and then their Baton to get the inmates to stop fighting. There were no staff injuries and only minor injuries to the inmates. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 7 - California State Prison, Sacramento - While the EOP Floor Officer was escorting a LVN, an inmate requested medication from the LVN. The Officer signaled the Control Booth Officer to open the cell. The inmate stepped out of his cell and took a bladed aggressive stance and became verbally threatening. The Officer drew his MK-9 and ordered the inmate to return to his cell. The inmate ignored the verbal order and attempted to strike the Officer. The Officer was able to move out of the way but the inmate was able to strike the Officer. The Officer then sprayed the inmate with his MK-9 striking in the facial area. One of the Officers then grabbed the inmate by his shoulders and forced him to the ground. The inmate was handcuffed and medically evaluated. No staff injuries were reported. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 6 - Corcoran State Prison - Staff observed two Northern Hispanic inmates attacking a third Northern Hispanic inmate. Orders for the inmates to stop and get down were ignored. Responding staff discharged OC pepper spray. The inmates then complied with orders, were placed into restraints and re-housed in ASU. CLICK HERE for Corcoran State Prison archive. March 6 - Heman G. Stark Youth Facilit - During a return trade-line movement from school, a group of nine wards attacked one ward. March 6 - Ironwood State Prison - Two Hispanic inmates rushed into a cell and attacked two other Hispanic inmates during feeding. OC pepper spray was used to quell the incident. Three Exact Impact rounds were fired in an attempt to gain compliance with orders to stop fighting and get down. The inmates stopped fighting and were placed in handcuffs and re-housed. CLICK HERE for Pelican Bay State Prison archive. March 5 - Pelican Bay State Prison - Two cellmates were involved in mutual combat on the tier. The inmates ignored orders to stop fighting and get down on the floor. Staff fired one 40mm Exact round to gain compliance from the inmates. The round missed the inmates; however it had the desired effect and the inmates stopped fighting, got down on the floor and were handcuffed by responding staff. Chaderjian Youth Correctional Facility - Two Officers were escorting a ward when the ward became resistant and kicked one of the officers. The ward and the Officer received medical attention. March 4 - California State Prison, Sacramento - While on the lower handball court, an inmate attacked another inmate with a weapon made from a rusty nail. Staff used OC pepper spray to quell the incident. CLICK HERE for CSP-Sacramento archive. March 4 - Corcoran State Prison - During Gym Yard, two Fresno Bulldogs were being escorted from the West Gate. As escorting staff closed the gate, the two Bulldog inmates continued to walk ahead. Three Northern Hispanic inmates on the Gym Yard rushed the two Bulldogs, which resulted in a riot. March 2 - Valley State Prison for Women - An inmate hit an Officer after refusing to sit on a bench while her cell was being cleaned. The inmate pushed the Officer. Both began to struggle and fell to the floor. The inmate kicked, scratched and attempted to bite and punch the Officer. Responding staff drew his baton and ordered the inmate to stop with negative results. Upon raising his baton, the Officer ordered the inmate to stop again; to which she complied.
