Last Update: July 31, 2008 June 1-30, 2008 Compiled by Nichol Gomez CCPOA Communications Division June 4 - An inmate committed sexual battery on another inmate. The inmates were showering when one inmate grabbed the other by the testicles. The inmate began hitting the assaultive inmate in the face. Staff stopped the fight and both inmates were placed in ASU. June 4 - An inmate bleeding from his wrist approached an officer. When the officer looked at the cut, the inmate pulled a razor out of his pocket and attempted to slash the officer. The officer utilized pepper spray and the inmate submitted to the placement of handcuffs. The officer was not injured. The inmate was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his wounds. June 3 - Three SHU inmates battered another inmate while on a controlled exercise yard. Staff ordered the inmates to stop with negative results. Staff then fired multiple 40 mm rounds to stop the fight. There were minor injuries to the involved inmates, but no staff injuries as a result of the incident. California State Prison, Los Angeles June 17 - While escorting an LVN for medication distribution, and inmate became hostile. The officer reached out to retrieve the medication and the inmate grabbed the officer's hand. The inmate proceeded to punched the officer and the LVN. The officer utilized pepper spray to stop the attack. The officer sustained redness and swelling to the hand and wrist. California State Prison, Sacramento June 3 - A riot occurred on a main exercise yard involving 11 inmates, four were Del Paso Heights Bloods and seven Oak Park Bloods. Responding staff used 40mm rounds, pepper spray, and grenades to stop the incident. One inmate-manufactured weapon was recovered during the incident. Another weapon was found uncontrolled near the incident. All involved inmates were placed in ASU. June 3 - An officer was walking past the holding cells in ASU where an inmate was awaiting an escort, when the inmate spat on the officer striking him on the forearm. The inmate continued to keep his face in the cuff port spitting in the direction of the officer. The inmate refused orders to remove his face from the cuff port. The officer utilized pepper spray striking the inmate in the facial area. Kern Valley State Prison June 3 - In a dining hall, three inmates committed battery on an inmate with a weapon resulting in serious bodily injury. The Supervising Cook activated her personal alarm. Responding staff gave repeated verbal orders for the inmates to stop fighting and assume a prone position. The inmates ignored the orders and continued their assault on the victim inmate. Staff utilized pepper spray striking them in the facial area. This had the desired effect as all the inmates stopped fighting and assumed a prone position. The involved inmates were handcuffed and escorted to be decontaminated, medically evaluated and re-housed within ASU. The victim sustained approximately seven puncture wounds to his back, side and leg. The inmate was subsequently taken to an outside hospital for treatment. Parole June 29 - A parolee killed his girlfriend and was later shot by Madera police. The parolee was treated at a local hospital and then booked into the county jail. June 27 - A High Control parolee was arrested by Oakland police after he kidnapped and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old female and her friend. The females were held at gunpoint and eventually taken to a residence where they were forced to strip naked. The parolee physically and sexually assaulted the victims. The following day, the parolee went to work, leaving the victims tied up and held at gunpoint by two other females. One of the victims was able to send a text message to her sister who then contacted police. At the time of the arrest, the parolee was in possession of an Uzi Submachine gun. June 27 - A parolee stole checks and three puppies (estimated value of $3,330) from his employer, a veterinary clinic. The parolee cashed three of the stolen checks for the amount of $15,000. The parolee remains at large. June 18 - A parolee and his sister were involved in an argument with the parolee's girlfriend. During the argument, the girlfriend was shot and both the parolee and his sister fled. The victim was rushed to the hospital where she died. The parolee was then apprehended. June 18 - A parolee is the prime suspect in a homicide. Attempts to locate the parolee failed and the Board of Parole Hearings suspended his parole. The parolee and another man are charged with the brutal beating of a 35-year-old man, who died 10 days after he was found bloody and unconscious next to a drainage canal. The parolee is being sought for criminal homicide, robbery, torture, felony assault, as well as violation of parole. June 16 - Three parolees were arrested following a high-speed pursuit and standoff in West Covina. The three parolees were members of a Long Beach Asian gang that specializes in burglary, and believed to be responsible for area burglaries. June 16 - A parolee was arrested for drunken driving that resulted in the deaths of two people and left two critically injured. The parolee was booked under an alias until a parolee agent became aware of the incident and positively identified the parolee. The parolee was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence alcohol/drugs causing bodily injury and driving with a suspended license. June 16 - A parolee was shot and killed when he answered a knock at his door. June 16 - A second striker, parolee-at-large was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Yolo County Sheriff's deputy. The day before the arrest, a deputy radioed that he had been shot. Responding officers found the wounded deputy and an abandoned baby in the parolee-at-large's car. The deputy was taken to the hospital but died. June 6 - A parolee was arrested for an officer-involved shooting after the parolee and two other men tripped a silent burglar alarm from a check cashing business. Officers responded to the burglary alarm and found at least three suspects exiting the business. After a confrontation occurred, officers shot two suspects. Pelican Bay State Prison June 7 - A riot broke out on an exercise yard. Verbal orders to stop fighting were ignored, so staff used pepper spray, rubber baton rounds and fired two rounds from a mini 14 rifle to stop the riot. Officers found four inmate-made weapons at the scene including one made of metal. No staff were injured. June 3 - A PSU inmate who refused to take his court ordered mediation was extracted from his cell during a controlled use of force. Staff used one burst of pepper spray and the inmate complied with orders. The inmate was decontaminated, given his medication and re-housed. R. J. Donovan State Prison June 25 - A third strike inmate slashed an officer with a modified disposable razor before being subdued by other officers. The officer had cuts to his chin and neck. The officer was treated at an outside hospital and released. The attack prompted a lockdown of the facility so investigators could search cell to cell to determine whether it was an isolated incident. Salinas Valley State Prison June 4 - Staff monitoring the morning yard release observed two Bulldog inmates and two Northern Hispanic inmates engaged in a riot. A Code I response was initiated and staff ordered the inmates to stop fighting. A third Northern Hispanic inmate attempted to participate in the riot but staff used physical force to stop him. Responding staff utilized 40mm rounds, CN gas and pepper spray to stop the riot and gain compliance. An inspection of the involved inmates revealed that one of the inmates sustained several superficial puncture wounds and a search of the area resulted in the discovery of one plastic stabbing type weapon. All five inmates were treated for minor injuries and placed into ASU. June 3 - Staff monitoring the morning yard release observed one Southern Hispanic inmate and one Bulldog inmate fighting. A Code I response was initiated and staff ordered the inmates to stop fighting; to which the inmates did not comply. Responding staff utilized 40mm rounds, CN gas and pepper spray to gain compliance. Both inmates were treated for minor injuries and placed in ASU. June 3 - Staff monitoring the afternoon yard release observed two Bulldog inmates assault one Northern Hispanic inmate. A Code I response was initiated and staff ordered the inmates to stop fighting; to which the inmates did not comply. Responding staff utilized 40 mm, CN gas and pepper spray to gain compliance.
